The Legendary Isle of  DJERBA: Half Day Tour 

Duration: approx. 5 hours  (8.30 – 13.00 / 13.30)

NB* The El Ghirba Synagogue is closed on SATURDAYS

A half day  tour of the main sites and attractions of the island of Djerba, designed for the first-time visitor. Today we will see and explore the following places:

·        The El Ghriba Synagogue: the most ancient & important functioning synagogue in North Africa, and the spiritual locus of the ancient community of Djerbian Jews. (*closed on Saturdays)

·        ErRiadh Village & the Djerbahood Project: walk the narrow of the charming village of ErRiadh, home to Jews, Muslims and Europeans. See the marvleous street murals of the Djerbahood project – a project which was undertaken in 2015, involving over 150 artists from 30 different countries.

·        Guellala & Le Musée du Patrimoine: Because of the rich clay deposits in the area, Guellala was the sole pottery producer and exporter in southern Tunisia for most of its history. Visit a traditional kiln, meet a local artisan, and learn about the pottery which is still produced today. Visit the superb ethnographic Museum in Guellala: a private museum dedicated to the unique customs & traditions of the different peoples of Djerba.

·       Houmt Souk:  a walking tour of the oldest quarter of Houmt Souk. See: the historic mosques, the Greek Orthodox & Maltese churches, the fondouks (caravanserays),  traditional weavers workshops, covered souks, the daily fish auction (a curiosity – ask us why it is unique to Djerba) & the central market. Meet traditional artisans and go to a weekly market in one of the towns or villages. We end with a visit of the picturesque  fishing port, with its fine views of the traditional fishing boats, octopus pots and the historic 16^th century fortress of Borj el Kebir (Borj Ghazi Mustapha) – the site of famous Battle of Djerba  between the so-called Pirates of Barbary, the Ottomans and the Spanish Armada.
