Roman Uthina, The Great Aqueduct of Carthage, Zaghouan & the village of Takrouna:
Day Trip from Tunis
Duration: approximately 8:30 -16:30
This tour can begin and end in Tunis, Hammamet or Sousse
Departing from Tunis, we drive along the surviving stretches of the ancient aqueduct of Roman Carthage. Water was carried by a complex system of pipes, reservoirs and conduits supported on lofty arches from Zaghouan springs to the city center – a distance of over 132 km!
To the spectacular site of Roman Uthina (Oudna). Off-the-beaten-track, this beautiful and only partially excavated site offers sweeping views of the countryside. According to Pliny, Uthina was settled by the veterans of the legio XIII. We see the amphitheater, partially sunken into the ground in a disused quarry. With an estimated capacity of14,700, it was the 3rd largest amphitheatre in Tunisia. Notable too, is the gladiators’ lararium with painted decoration still in situ .In an excellent state of preservation, this arena has been used as a film location in various documentaries. We also see the Capitolium Temple (once the largest in North Africa),and theremains of the lavish villas and baths.
After our picnic (supplied), we continue Panoramic drive to Zaghouan Mountain & town. The winding road ascends the slope of the mountain until we reach the Temple des Eaux – the ornate monumental Nymphaeum (fountain) which marks the main source of the springs that fed the Great Roman Aqueduct of Carthage.
Our final stop is the picturesque hilltop Berber village of Takrouna, overlooking the Bay of Hammamet & Zaghouan mountain. Some time to explore this traditional village, meet the local people, and take a short break at Le Rocher Bleu a combined café, art gallery and museum. The Blue Rock Project was conceived by a local artist who was born in Takrouna, as a way to bring visitors and revitalize the village. Return to Tunis.
