Information about Sofia
With a population of 1.3 million people, the 7,000 year-old capital city of Bulgaria is also its largest city. Sofia is situated in a valley at the foot of popular ski mountain, Mt. Vitosha. Its location at the convergence of three mountain passes has made Sofia historically the crossroads connecting the Black and Agean Seas with central Europe and the Adriatic Sea.
Summers in Sofia are long, warm and sunny, just as winters here are also long, but cold, snowy and perfect for skiing. The ancient city is rich with interesting ruins, historic churches and magnificent castles. The Boyana Church is an important UNESCO World Heritage Site and a fascinating place to visit, as are the Ivan Nazov National Theater and the Alexander Nevski Church.
Its antiquity puts no damper on the nightlife of Sofia, with many all -night bars and cafes lining its ancient cobblestone streets and providing a bit of fun for students from its 16 universities.
