We depart from the isle of Djerba via the Phoenician causeway.  Here the mountainous landscape is dotted with spectacularly sited ksour – monumental fortified granaries. Dating from medieval times, these were used by the local tribes up until the modern era, for storage and defence. Like honeycomb, each ksar is composed of a series of individual cells (ghorfas) – each belonging to a different family – and superimposed on one another. Our first stop is the 13th century Ksar Hallouf - one of the oldest in the region, from which one can see the sea and Djerba (on a clear day). We drive via the Route, making stops along the way, including a visit to Ksar Haddada, which was used as a set in the Star Wars film, the Phantom Menace.

We continue to Chenini, the largest mountain village of the south. We spend some time exploring this fascinating place, with its ancient homes, granaries, stables & mosque. After lunch, we will drive to the stunning village of Douiret, a fortified ancient village carved into the slopes of a mountain. 

Our final stop is Ksar Ouled Soltane –  perhaps the finest example of a ksar in the region.

We return to Djerba via the causeway.
