Tour: UNESCO town Dubrovnik, from Split  (10-12 hours tour)  (or vice-versa: UNESCO town Split, from Dubrovnik)

It takes 3,5 hours to reach Dubrovnik from Split. But it’s the type of ride that is an attraction on its own, because we’ll be driving right by the Adriatic coastline and you will certainly be impressed by the beauty of mountains, islands, peninsulas and small villages along the road. Believe it or not, I’m still excited about driving this road regardless of all those countless times I took it all ready.

Once we get to Dubrovnik you’ll realize why this city is often named as the “Pearl of the Adriatic”, and why it was induced to the collection of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Its unique location on the Adriatic coast made it an important trade hub back in Middle Ages. The city thrived on intense trading and wise political decisions, to the point where even Venice had to consider its power and importance.

The power can instantly be observed with the massive fortifications and walls surrounding the historical part of Dubrovnik. As you get inside the old town, the unique beauty of this place gets uncovered with every step you take. We’ll stroll along Stradun promenade, which houses the main historic landmarks such as the Franciscan monastery and the Old Pharmacy inside it, which was opened in the 14th century. This area also features the St. Blaise church, Rector’s Palace and Sponza Palace.

Unfortunately, during the Balkan wars of the 1990s the old part of Dubrovnik was heavily damaged. And only with the help of international aid it was possible to restore the town completely and make it one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the Adriatic region.

After taking an extensive walk through Dubrovnik, we can enjoy a tasty lunch in one of the local restaurants, offering fresh seafood and famous Croatian wines. Once we finish the lunch, we’ll drive to Srdj, which is a hill located above Dubrovnik and offering a magnificent panoramic view over the place and the beautiful nature surrounding it. After admiring the view for some time we’ll return to Dubrovnik.

Matt is noticeably proud of his country and Croatians. He is also very well informed about Croatian history, geography, and customs and delighted us with his interesting comments each of our tour days (Dubrovnik, Dalmatian islands and Split) with him. He also has a good sense of humor. Matt was very focused on providing us with safe and exciting experiences. He is a very patient man. The activities, especially those involving interactions with locals, were well-planned, unusual, and enjoyable. I hope to return to Croatia; there is so much more to see in this beautiful country.
