Tour: Magical Island Brac - the island where the White House stone came from

The biggest island in the Dalmatian region, Brac shows signs of human settlements that date back to the Paleolithic Period. Today Brac is a major tourist destination among the Adriatic islands, yet it’s also an important agricultural center and a major limestone production site. The stone produced in local quarries is famous all over the planet, with such important buildings as Berlin and Budapest Parliaments and the White House in Washington built using the limestone from Brac. And as you get to this beautiful island you understand why people preferred to settle here throughout the history of mankind.

The tour starts with a ferry ride from Split to Supetar (the largest town on Brac), which takes about 50 minutes. Once we get to Supetar our tour takes us further to the most interesting parts of the island. You’ll see numerous vineyards and stone quarries and will have the chance to enjoy fresh seafood in small taverns spread around the island. The tour will endure depending on the time you have at your disposal and can range from several hours to a whole day. As we finish, you have the option to returnto Split or take the boat to the nearby island of Hvar and continue your Adriatic explorations there.

There are many different places to explore on Brac. We can wander around Supetar, which was established by the Romans, or ascend to the ancient village Skrip, which dates back 5000 years! We would also visit Pucisca, renowned for its stone cutting tradition that is still alive. One of Pucisca highlights is Stone Masons school visit - we would see students working with stone and still using ancient Greek and Roman techniques – all the work has been done manually - using hammer, chisel and sandstone paper only! We can also visit the former capital of the island Nerezisca, that depicts the traditional local lifestyle. And if you want to enjoy the nature, we can drive to Vidova gora, which is the highest mountain (780m/2400ft) of all the Adriatic islands, or go swimming to the Golden Horn beach and enjoy its amazing transparent water.
