In the 16th century, King Philip II, one of Spanish history’s two most powerful kings, decided upon a place of residence, from which to run his huge empire. Thus was born the history of Eil Escorial: monastery, home of kings and Spain’s most important royal pantheon. There can be no better way of discovering this extraordinary building than with a visit steered by the talent and knowledge of a local guide, capable of leading you through the halls, chambers and atmospheres of histories past. The visit usually includes a trip to an amazing monument listed on the Guinness book of records: the Valley of the Fallen, with its stunning mountain backdrop.

Of the many beautiful sites Alcala has to offer, its internationally famous University, founded by Cardinal Cisneros in the 15th century, is of particular relevance.
